Home of Football: How Podcasters Will Be Covering the 2022 Qatar Men’s World Cup
There’s no doubt about it, the upcoming FIFA Men’s World Cup in Qatar will be a defining moment in football. Since it was announced that Qatar will host the 2022 finals twelve years ago, allegations of corruption, workers rights and slavery, suitability, and a poor record on human rights have made this a controversial tournament.
This has resulted in hundreds of conversations beyond football across the Podcast universe, and in the run up to the finals, we’ve pulled together some of the highlights coming from the Acast Creator Network.
Starting off with our footballing podcasts, covering every second of action, plus all the biggest stories from the games.
Talksport’s GameDay podcast will be releasing daily episodes, analysing and previewing every single game meanwhile Talksport Daily will rebrand to World Cup Daily, and provide bitesize breaking news. The Game will also be busy, producing daily episodes that dive into every aspect of the stories from Qatar.
The Football Ramble have been hard at work producing some fascinating insight from behind-the-scenes at the tournament, with Inside The Qatar World Cup, and this series continues as the games begin. Elsewhere, their regular schedule will keep listeners entertained, and England fans will benefit from a weekly dedicated Lions Watch podcast.
As you’d expect, former footballers on the Acast Creator Network will be busy during the World Cup. That Peter Crouch Podcast will be upping their schedule to twice a week, Rio Ferdinand’s Vibe With FIVE will be running special episodes, and Fara Williams’ Boots, Balls & Bras will cover the biggest results throughout the month.
Away from football, some of our daily news briefing shows and cultural commentary shows will be taking a look at the decision to award the tournament to Qatar, and the resulting questions on LGBTQIA+ rights, workers rights, weather suitability and corruption.
The Guardian’s Football Weekly are currently running special episodes covering the above topics including Qatar’s relationship with football, testimonials from workers, LGBT people, and the rights of women.
Expect daily updates and analysis from Tortoise Media’s Sensemaker, answering critical questions on boycotts from France’s Popcorn and over in Ireland, The David McWilliams Podcast, The Blindboy Podcast and The Stand with Eamon Dunphy will also cover all aspects of the tournament.
When it comes to international relations during the World Cup, Dan Snow’s History Hit has it covered. As a UK-based podcast, they will be looking at a history of diplomacy and relationships between England and whoever they are playing - starting with England vs Iran on Monday 21st. That will be a fascinating listen, particularly given the recent protests and coverage.
The World Cup kicks off on Sunday, 16:00 GMT with Qatar versus Ecuador. Whatever your viewpoint on the tournament, and however you want to follow the games, there will be a podcast for that.
